Dog who believes he is a cat

UK Story ..........Chippy, a dog who developed an identity crisis after sharing a home with 40 cats, is being offered for adoption by the Cats Protection League as an 'honorary' feline.

The Jack Russell never learned how to be a dog after spending his life around cats, the charity in Stroud, Gloucestershire believes.

Liz Dart, who is fostering Chippy in Nailsworth, said: "He came to us as part of a rescue from a multi-cat household in Cirencester.

"At first we were told he was 19, blind and deaf but that wasn't the case.

"We couldn't leave Chippy behind because he had lived with cats all his life. I suppose, having always lived among them he just doesn't know any different. He never learned how to be a dog.

"He goes to bed with Annie, one of the other cats, as they are very close and ideally we would home them together. She's very protective of him.

"He didn't really bark and still uses a litter tray now. He has chewed up a toy mouse – whether he was responding to cat nip on it, I don't know. He eats dog food now – goodness knows what he ate before."

Vets believe that Chippy is aged between 13 and 15 years old.

"He's a very gentle, old dog and we are very fond of him. It's sometimes hard to find a good home for elderly pets," Miss Dart continued.

"He doesn't mind children but a quieter home would suit him better because of his age."

A vet has estimated that he is aged between 13 and 15 years old.

'Writing' on the Stroud Cats Protection League website, Chippy said: "During the last 19 years I have lost count of the number of cats that I have shared my home with.

"I use a litter tray but have never got the hang of purring! When my owner and 40 felines were evicted the nice people at CP just couldn't leave me behind."

Ex-TCU football player Lorenzo Jones shot during argument over can of beer

A former Texas Christian University football player was shot after an argument with his mother's boyfriend over a can of beer, according to Florida authorities. Lorenzo Jones, 22, was hospitalized after he was shot in the abdomen on June 30, according to the Broward County sheriff's office.

According to the Broward County sheriff's office, Jones, who was visiting his mom during a break from school, had gotten into an argument with his mom's boyfriend, Ricky Von Welch, at her apartment complex. Welch knocked a can of beer from Jones' hand and the two men, who were armed with folding knives, threatened to attack each other. At one point, the men dropped their knives, and Jones slapped Welch in the face, authorities said. Welch then went inside the apartment and got a handgun.

According to the sheriff's office, Jones said, “What are you going to do, shoot me?”

Jones was taken to Broward General Medical Center where the Miami Herald reported he was listed in critical condition last week. The hospital today did not immediately comment on whether Jones remained hospitalized.

Welch, 46, was accused of attempted murder a day after the incident and remained in custody this morning. No bail was set, according to the Broward County sheriff's Web site.

A backup defensive tackle, Jones was a standout at McKinney High School and one of TCU's top recruits in 2005.

Jones and two former TCU basketball players were accused of raping an 18-year-old student in her dorm room in October 2006. Jones, who was never indicted, spent 11 months in jail before the charge was dismissed.

Teen Falls Asleep During Face Tattoo

In the general category of "WTF?" this Belgian teenager supposedly fell asleep while getting her face tattooed and woke up to 56 Rihanna-style stars on her face. Now, she's suing the tattoo artist, claiming he misunderstood her. The artist counters that Starface is only peeved because her boyfriend dumped her after seeing the monstrosity.

Um, how do you "doze off" while getting your face inked? Getting a tattoo isn't like going to the meditation room at the Four Seasons. It's loud. There's drilling. It also hurts. A lot. Lastly, it's your face.

Plus, getting tattoos removed hurts almost as bad, leaves scars and takes ages, so there's no real (laser) light at the end of this tunnel.

Regardless of who's telling the truth, the lesson here is that when you're permanently inking something on your bod, it's your responsibility to stay awake to make sure the tattoo artist doesn't f*ck anything up.

Did this chick get a raw deal or just lack common sense?

Ohio teacher accused of preaching in class sues district

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio school teacher fired over accusations that he preached Christianity in class says in a $1 million lawsuit that his free speech and civil rights were violated.

John Freshwater, an eighth-grade teacher, also says he was harassed because of his religion, was defamed and suffered a hostile work environment.

The Mount Vernon school board created a work situation that allowed Freshwater "to be harassed by both administrators and co-workers on account of his religion," according to the lawsuit against the board and school administrators filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Columbus.

A message was left with Superintendent Steve Sharp on Wednesday seeking comment.

The Mount Vernon school board fired Freshwater last year, citing an internal investigation that found he had preached his Christian beliefs in class, in violation of the traditional separation of church and state.

Freshwater was also accused of using a scientific device to burn a cross image onto a student's arm and of keeping a Bible on his desk.

Freshwater says other teachers were permitted to keep Bibles on their desks.

Freshwater is seeking $500,000 in lost wages, pension pay and lost opportunity costs and $500,000 in punitive damages.

Freshwater also said he was discriminated against because of his involvement with the student group, Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The lawsuit said an outside consultant's report that investigated Freshwater was incomplete and contained "scandalous allegations," which the lawsuit does not detail.

Sleeping pills, alcohol a bad mix for unruly United Airlines passenger

United Airlines diverted a recent flight bound for London after an incoherent and disruptive passenger, apparently woozy from a combination of pills, alcohol and lavatory hand soap, allegedly tried to bite a flight attendant in the leg.

Galina Rusanova, a British citizen, was charged with interference with a flight crew and assault for allegedly disrupting United Flight 934 from Los Angeles to London Heathrow Airport on April 29, forcing the plane to land in Maine.

She could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

In a Monday hearing in U.S. District Court in Bangor, Maine, Rusanova agreed to be detained pending trial.

Rusanova is described by the British press as a Russian-born artist, actress and author who rubs elbows with the rich and famous. She was returning home to the United Kingdom after traveling to California to visit a man she had met over the Internet, according to court documents.

"What wasn't disclosed through the affidavit is that Ms. Rusanova is a very intelligent, charming woman," said her attorney, Matthew Erickson. "This comes as a shock to her."
Erickson added: "Her mistake was to mix prescription drugs with alcohol. After that, all bets were off."

Drunken and unruly passengers are an unpleasant fact of life for flight attendants.

Cannes

How Cannes went down the pan: Attendees no longer care about movies - just drink, drugs and (naturally) sex.
Onlookers whoop appreciatively as she writhes around wearing only a huge diamond Chanel pendant around her neck.

Ogling men step forward to pour more champagne over her head and into her mouth while women flock round excitedly.

If you thought the Cannes Film Festival was the height of French glamor and celebrity sophistication, think again. Gone are the days when this event was renowned for its understated chic.

Where Hollywood's greatest names - from Kirk Douglas and Gregory Peck to Audrey Hepburn and Bette Davis - once strolled along the beach, freeloading Britons and uncouth Eurotrash now congregate, united in their desire to get high on sex, drink and drugs.
Many have no connection to the film industry - and no interest in it either.

Google Rents Goats To Replace Lawnmowers

In what absolutely reads like an April Fools joke, Google has a post on its blog today explaining how it has rented a herd of goats to replace the lawnmowers that normally cut the grass in the fields around its headquarters. This is Google’s “low-carbon” approach to maintaining its property.

Google is renting the goats from a company called California Grazing. Apparently, every so often a herder will bring about 200 of them to the campus and they’ll roam around for a week eating the grass. Not only that, these goats will fertilize the land at the same time — yes, that way.

Google claims the goats will cost about the same as lawn mowers would. And a border collie named Jen will be brought onto Google’s payroll to help with the herding as well, apparently. No word on how the maintenance workers who previously had this job feel about losing work to goats.

ABC's Shame

ABC runs a report showing the names and faces of two CIA contractors who may have had a role in the waterboarding of KSM and Abu Zubaydah. The network apparently outsourced this report to a freelancer named Matthew Cole, whose record in Nexis includes just three bylines -- two stories for Salon (one of which about "how Bush administration aid to Pakistan helps fund insurgents who kill U.S. troops"), and one for the San Jose Mercury News just two days after 9/11 reporting "anxiety about a backlash" among Muslims, who assure the reporter that the attack "has nothing to do with Islam."

Chopper Sex Pilot: Why Is Everyone Down on Me?

GARDENA, Calif. -- A commercial helicopter pilot is asking for forgiveness for taking part in some in-flight entertainment with a porn star in the skies over San Diego.
David Martz let adult film actress Puma Swede perform a sex act on him while he flew over San Diego, but he said at a National Transportation Safety Board administrative hearing that he has learned his lesson and won't do it again.

Martz testified Tuesday that his actions during the May 20, 2005, flight weren't bright and he's much more responsible now. He sought to rescind a Federal Aviation Administration order revoking his license.

An FAA attorney contended Martz actions were so reckless and irresponsible that it doesn't matter if he's changed.

After a three-hour hearing Tuesday, NTSB administrative law Judge William R. Mullins upheld a Federal Aviation Administration order revoking Martz's license. Mullins said Martz committed gross negligence and cannot have his license back.

A passenger videotaped the scene in the helicopter and an edited version later surfaced. Mullins viewed the unedited tape in chambers and ruled quickly.

Martz is known for ferrying celebrities like rocker/fellow sex-video star Tommy Lee. And in the infamous video obtained by TMZ, a topless Swede is seen on the tarmac at Montgomery Field in 2007. She can then be seen on the video inside the chopper alongside Martz, buzzing over crowded freeways and neighborhoods. Shortly afterward, she leaned over and performed a sex act on Martz.

Puma said it was a way to repay Martz for allowing the crew to use his chopper and hangar at Montgomery Field.

Martz had his pilot's license suspended and revoked twice previously for flying recklessly. He was also once investigated by the FAA for flying dangerously close to an Los Angeles police helicopter near Van Nuys airpor

Police in Conn. shoot chimp after it attacks woman

HARTFORD, Conn. — A 200-pound chimpanzee kept as a pet and once used in commercials was shot and killed by police Monday after it mauled a woman visiting its owner and later cornered an officer in his cruiser, authorities said.

Stamford police Lt. Richard Conklin said the injured woman was hospitalized late Monday in "very serious" condition at Stamford Hospital; her identity was not immediately released. Conklin said she suffered "a tremendous loss of blood" from serious facial injuries.

The 15-year-old chimpanzee's owner and two officers also were hurt, though police said the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

Police said they had no idea why the chimpanzee, named Travis, attacked the woman as she got out of her car to visit the animal's owner, Sandra Herold. Conklin said Herold wrestled with the animal, then ran inside to call 911.

"She retrieved a large butcher knife and stabbed her longtime pet numerous times in an effort to save her friend, who was really being brutally attacked," Conklin said.

Travis ran away and started roaming on Herold's property as police arrived. Officers set up security so medics could reach the critically injured woman lying on the ground, Conklin said.

As the woman was treated, the chimpanzee went after several of the officers, who retreated into their cars, Conklin said. Travis opened the door to one cruiser and started to get in, trapping an officer who then shot the chimpanzee several times, Conklin said.

The wounded chimpanzee fled. Conklin said police followed the trail of his blood down the driveway, into the open door of the home, through the house and to his living quarters, where he had retreated and died of his wounds.

Well-known around Stamford because he rode around in trucks belonging to his owners' towing company, Travis appeared on TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola when he was younger, made an appearance on the "Maury Povich Show" and took part in a television pilot, according to a 2003 story in The Advocate newspaper of Stamford.

LA MARQUE, Texas — An allegedly intoxicated couple stopped at a police station to try to catch a lift home. La Marque Police Chief Richard Price said the woman collapsed in the lobby. Her 22-year-old boyfriend was arrested after marijuana was found in his shoes.

Price told The Associated Press on Friday he believes the two were under the influence of narcotics and "thought they needed to get a ride home."

The Galveston County Daily News reports a police dispatcher monitoring security video Wednesday night noticed the pair.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Police on Florida's east coast arrested an 18-year-old for stealing a decorative apple from his teacher's desk and refusing to give it back. Officers said the student was playing with a spring and when his teacher confiscated it he took a red, glass apple from the teacher's desk. Officers told him he would face charges if he didn't return the apple.

The student responded, "So what, I'm not leaving without my spring," according to a report. ( LOL)

Officers took a picture of the apple as evidence. The student was released from jail.

Judges Plead Guilty in Scheme to Jail Youths for Profit

At worst, Hillary Transue thought she might get a stern lecture when she appeared before a judge for building a spoof MySpace page mocking the assistant principal at her high school in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. She was a stellar student who had never been in trouble, and the page stated clearly at the bottom that it was just a joke.Instead, the judge sentenced her to three months at a juvenile detention center on a charge of harassment.

She was handcuffed and taken away as her stunned parents stood by.

“I felt like I had been thrown into some surreal sort of nightmare,” said Hillary, 17, who was sentenced in 2007. “All I wanted to know was how this could be fair and why the judge would do such a thing.”

The answers became a bit clearer on Thursday as the judge, Mark A. Ciavarella Jr., and a colleague, Michael T. Conahan, appeared in federal court in Scranton, Pa., to plead guilty to wire fraud and income tax fraud for taking more than $2.6 million in kickbacks to send teenagers to two privately run youth detention centers run by PA Child Care and a sister company, Western PA Child Care.

While prosecutors say that Judge Conahan, 56, secured contracts for the two centers to house juvenile offenders, Judge Ciavarella, 58, was the one who carried out the sentencing to keep the centers filled.

“In my entire career, I’ve never heard of anything remotely approaching this,” said Senior Judge Arthur E. Grim, who was appointed by the State Supreme Court this week to determine what should be done with the estimated 5,000 juveniles who have been sentenced by Judge Ciavarella since the scheme started in 2003. Many of them were first-time offenders and some remain in detention.

The case has shocked Luzerne County, an area in northeastern Pennsylvania that has been battered by a loss of industrial jobs and the closing of most of its anthracite coal mines.

And it raised concerns about whether juveniles should be required to have counsel either before or during their appearances in court and whether juvenile courts should be open to the public or child advocates.

If the court agrees to the plea agreement, both judges will serve 87 months in federal prison and resign from the bench and bar. They are expected to be sentenced in the next several months. Lawyers for both men declined to comment.

Since state law forbids retirement benefits to judges convicted of a felony while in office, the judges would also lose their pensions.

With Judge Conahan serving as president judge in control of the budget and Judge Ciavarella overseeing the juvenile courts, they set the kickback scheme in motion in December 2002, the authorities said.

They shut down the county-run juvenile detention center, arguing that it was in poor condition, the authorities said, and maintained that the county had no choice but to send detained juveniles to the newly built private detention centers.

Prosecutors say the judges tried to conceal the kickbacks as payments to a company they control in Florida.

Though he pleaded guilty to the charges Thursday, Judge Ciavarella has denied sentencing juveniles who did not deserve it or sending them to the detention centers in a quid pro quo with the centers.

The son and mother were charged with assault while the father was charged with attempted murder and assault.

After checking it out for himself, LeDuff called 911 -- three times. It wasn't until a day later that he heard from the fire department, which arranged to meet him at the site.

Capt. Emma McDonald, who was among those at the scene, told LeDuff: "Every time I think I've seen it all, I see this."

Man charged with driving with worker on car hood

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — A man is facing assault charges after deputies said he hit a state transportation worker and continued driving several miles while the man clung to the hood of the car. Marin County prosecutors charged 73-year-old Peter Buchanan with assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving and hit-and-run driving Wednesday.

Authorities say Buchanan, an attorney, was returning to his office on Dec. 27 when he drove through a line of cones in Mill Valley and hit David Ramsey, a member of a Caltrans crew.

To avoid getting run over, authorities say Ramsey jumped on the hood of the Mercedes. But Buchanan allegedly continued driving, heading north on Highway 101 at speeds of 40 mph.

Authorities said Ramsey was able to jump off after two drivers blocked Buchanan's car when it exited the highway. Ramsey was not hurt.

Unreturned library book leads to woman's arrest

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa — An Iowa woman has been arrested because she failed to return a library book.

Thirty-nine-year-old Shelly Koontz was arrested Thursday night on a fifth-degree theft charge. She is accused of keeping "The Freedom Writers Diary," which she checked out from the public library in nearby Jesup in April.

Police say the book — which is about a high school teacher's effort to inspire students to write — is valued at $13.95.

Court records show library employees tried repeatedly to contact Koontz by phone and mail. A police officer even visited her home last September.

Officials at the Buchanan County jail say Koontz was released after posting $250 bond. No telephone listing for Koontz could be found in the Independence area.

Disgraced pastor faces more gay sex accusations

DENVER — Disgraced evangelical leader Ted Haggard's former church disclosed Friday that the gay sex scandal that caused his downfall extends to a young male church volunteer who reported having a sexual relationship with Haggard — a revelation that comes as Haggard tries to repair his public image.

Brady Boyd, who succeeded Haggard as senior pastor of the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, told The Associated Press that the man came forward to church officials in late 2006 shortly after a Denver male prostitute claimed to have had a three-year cash-for-sex relationship with Haggard.

Boyd said an "overwhelming pool of evidence" pointed to an "inappropriate, consensual sexual relationship" that "went on for a long period of time ... it wasn't a one-time act." Boyd said the man was in his early 20s at the time. He said he was certain the man was of legal age when it began.

Reached Friday night, Haggard declined to comment and said all interviews would have to be arranged through a publicist for HBO, which is airing a documentary about him this month.

In an AP interview this month before an appearance in front of TV critics in California, Haggard described his sexuality as complex and something that can't be put into "stereotypical boxes."

Nigeria police hold 'robber' goat

Police in Nigeria are holding a goat handed to them by a vigilante group, which said it was a car thief who had used witchcraft to change shape.

A police spokesman in Kwara State has been quoted as saying that the "armed robbery suspect" would remain in custody until investigations were over.

But another police spokesman told the BBC the goat was being held in case its owner claimed it.

The belief in witchcraft and the power to change shapes is common in Nigeria.

Police reform activists have condemned the "arrest", saying it highlights the low education levels of many Nigerian police officers."There are officers who don't even have a secondary school education, and the police have a big job to do in finding these people and getting rid of them."

The BBC's Andrew Walker in Abuja says communities often rely on ill-educated and badly prepared vigilante squads to fill the gaps where the police will not patrol at night. He said in the past political leaders had allowed the police to be filled with incompetent and in some cases criminal officers so they could be easily bought to protect their own criminal activities.

Newspaper claims suspect transformed into a goat

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP)— One of Nigeria's biggest daily newspapers reported that police implicated a goat in an attempted automobile theft. In a front-page article on Friday, the Vanguard newspaper said that two men tried to steal a Mazda car two days earlier in Kwara State, with one suspect transforming himself into a goat as vigilantes cornered him.

The paper quoted police spokesman Tunde Mohammed as saying that while one suspect escaped, the other transformed into a goat as he was about to be apprehended.

The newspaper reported that police paraded the goat before journalists, and published a picture of the animal.

Police in the state couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Belief in black magic is widespread in Nigeria, particularly in far-flung rural areas.

The cow had left the area by the time rangers arrived, but other people warned fellow bikers and hikers on the trail about the animal.

Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance vice president Jason Vogel called the incident "odd, rare and random."

Can't Miss That Hair Appointment: Woman goes to hair appointment after crash

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — An elderly woman in Palm Beach County crashed with her vehicle into a man on a scooter and then kept driving to make her hair appointment, police said.

Louise Davidson, 77, was arrested Thursday for leaving the scene of an injury crash, Boynton Beach police said.

Police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said the woman was turning right when she veered into the path of the oncoming scooter that had the right of way. The man was thrown by the impact onto the windshield and then fell to the road, she added.

Police said they later spotted the woman's car after she had her hair appointment.

Authorities said the man suffered abrasions all over his body but the injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

Hungary gorilla

BUDAPEST, Hungary(AP)— The Budapest Zoo says a 32-year-old female gorilla has undergone gynecological surgery, the first such operation in Hungary and rare even worldwide.

Spokesman Zoltan Hanga says veterinarians and doctors carried out the procedure late Thursday night based on the diagnosis that Liesel, who came to Budapest in 1989 from Germany's Frankfurt Zoo, may have a malignant tumor on her right ovary.

Hanga says no tumors were found during the procedure, which required Liesel to be fully sedated for three hours. She will be kept under observation and apart from the rest of gorillas at the zoo for about a week.

More exams will be needed to determine why the mother of three — Dango, Gorka and Ebobo — has not given birth since 2000.

Police say masked man waited in line to rob bank

STOW, Ohio (ap) — A man may have tipped his intentions when he stood in line at an Ohio bank wearing a ski mask before staging a holdup. Police in Stow near Akron say 24-year-old Feliks Goldshtein of Highland Heights was arrested minutes later on Thursday following a brief car chase.

Police say the teller asked the man to take off the mask before being served. At that point the man displayed what turned out to be a toy gun and told the teller to give him all the money. He made off with an undisclosed amount.

Police Captain Rick Myers says it's unusual for a masked robber to wait in line at a bank.

Goldshtein was held at the Summit County Jail Friday on charges of aggravated robbery and failure to comply with a police order. Municipal Court records don't identify an attorney for Goldshtein.

Woman allegedly tries to kill hubby with eye drops

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A 40-year-old southwest Missouri woman is accused of trying to kill her husband by spiking his tea with a half bottle of Visine eye drops. Greene County deputies said the woman was jailed Thursday night on $100,000 bond on a first-degree assault charge.

She was arrested late Wednesday after a co-worker told Greene County deputies that the woman told her about the plot to kill her husband.

A probable cause statement said the husband told investigators he'd been having stomach problems for the past two months.

The statement said poison control experts told a detective that ingesting too much Visine would lead to a coma and other "serious symptoms."

Authorities say the woman researched other means of killing her husband when the first attempt didn't work.

DIVORCE DOC: GIVE MY KIDNEY BACK!

She stole his heart, but it's his kidney that he wants back.

A Long Island surgeon who dumped his wife after she allegedly had a steamy affair wants her to give back the kidney he lovingly gave her, or fork over the $1.5 million he claims the organ is worth.

"I saved her life and then, to be betrayed like this, is unfathomable. It's incomprehensible," said Dr. Richard Batista, 49.

"I feel humbled and betrayed and disregarded. This divorce is killing me."

Batista, a vascular surgeon at Nassau University Medical Center, claimed his wife left him after getting physical with her physical therapist.

He said the couple married on Aug. 31, 1990, in "a very nice, lavish wedding," but two years later, the relationship began a "slow downward trend."

Since he filed for divorce in 2005, he said, she has made it increasingly difficult for him see their three children.

"The main reason the doctor is doing this is because of how he's been treated in this case," said Dominic Barbara, Batista's lawyer.

They are asking for the $1.5 million as part of the distribution of assets based on a medical expert's estimated value of the kidney.

"In theory, we are asking for the return of the kidney," Barbara said. "Of course, he wouldn't really ask for that, but the value of it."

Dawnell Batista, a physician's assistant at Winthrop Hospital in Garden City, had her first kidney transplant as a baby, with her father as the donor, and a second one years later, from her brother. Her body rejected both kidneys.

Her husband then donated one of his healthy organs to her in June 2001.

"There's no greater feeling on the planet" than to save a life, said the surgeon, who lives in Ronkonkoma.

But Dawnell's new lease on life left her with a wandering eye, he claimed.

Within two years of the lifesaving transplant, he said, she suffered a knee injury during a karate class - then hopped into bed with her physical therapist.

Even worse, she flaunted her romance - once leaving her lover's clothes in the family laundry, he claimed.

The physical therapist, David Cazalet, vehemently denied the accusation.

"We're friends - we've never had an affair," he insisted, calling Batista a "big monster."

"I feel bad for her because he's a wackadoo," he said.

Dawnell Batista's lawyer refused to comment.

"She's a wonderful person," said her mother, Cynthia Carroll.

A brother, who asked that his name not be used, said, "You expect the worst from a bad person." nypost

Mother's Outrage: Hospital Throws Baby's Body In Trash

We've all heard about medical mistakes before but what happened to one mother in New Jersey is beyond comprehension. Kaylnn Moore told reporters in New York yesterday that when she went into labor a month early on December 21, doctors at Christ Hospital in Jersey decided to do a C-section.

But instead of getting her Christmas miracle, a healthy baby boy named Bashir, Moore's son was stillborn. Devastated, the young mother left her baby's remains in the care of the hospital and went home. When she came back to claim him, the hospital couldn't find his body. That's right, you heard me, the Christ Hospital claimed it couldn't find Bashir. ...
How does a hospital lose an infant's body?If that wasn't bad enough, Moore says police told her that her son had accidentally been thrown in the trash; tossed away like garbage. How in the world could that happen? Surely, medical professionals can tell the difference between a little black boy and a pile of trash, right? Apparently, not because now officials are searching dumps in New Jersey and Pennsylvania looking for Bashir's remains.

It makes me wonder about the state of health care in this country. And, it should make you think the next time you check in the hospital.

Lou the mule credited with saving woman from fire

McMINNVILLE, Tenn. — Jolene Solomon is beginning the new year with her life, her mule named Lou and little else. The Southern Standard in McMinnville reported Solomon had just finished eating supper on New Year's Day when Lou's braying and acting up got her attention.

Solomon, 63, who lived alone, stepped outside, she saw her house was on fire. She called 911 and as she waited for firefighters, her home and everything in it burned to the ground.

She said her father bought Lou years ago to help her and her late sister, Blue, around the farm. It took Lou months to get over the loss of her sister.

Solomon said she has 'lost it all', but credits Lou with saving her life.

Christmas Crook: Lawyer: Alleged Pa. attic intruder 'sorry, upset'

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — A man who allegedly squatted in the attic of a Pennsylvania family's home over Christmas and helped himself to their belongings is "sorry and upset" it happened, his lawyer said Monday.

Police say 21-year-old Stanley Carter stole food, clothing, cash and Christmas presents while living in the attic of Stacy Ferrance's home outside Wilkes-Barre.

Carter waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday. His attorney, public defender Basil Russin, said Carter, of Trumann, Ark., is "very sorry and upset it happened. He was very peaceful up there and kept to himself."

Why was mom asleep when a six year old had to go to school???-Va 6-year-old takes family car after missing bus

Why was mom asleep when a six year old had to go to school???

WICOMICO CHURCH, Va. — Having missed his bus, a 6-year-old Virginia boy tried to drive to school in his family's sedan — and crashed.

State police say the boy suffered only minor injuries and eventually arrived at school after being evaluated at a local hospital. Police did not immediately return a call Tuesday asking who brought him there.

It happened around 7:40 a.m. Monday on Route 360, about 61 miles east of Richmond.

Police say the boy, who wasn't identified, missed the bus, took the keys to his family's 2005 Ford Taurus and started toward school while his mother was asleep.

He ran off the road several times before hitting an embankment and utility pole. Police say he wasn't wearing a safety belt.

The incident remains under investigation.

UFOs?

(Jan. 4) - Mysterious lights in the sky over northern England prompted a flood of phone calls to media outlets over the holidays. "The UFO sighting is the hot topic around here at the moment," says Tony Clynch, 40, of Barrow. "Everyone keeps asking each other if they saw the lights."
Deborah Wilkin saw two lights on Christmas Day from her home in Urswick. "They were hovering in the sky for about five minutes and then they moved and just went," she said. "It was the most bizarre thing I have ever seen. They were absolutely fantastic." Many others reported seeing the lights on Dec. 27.
The North West Daily Mail reported Saturday that a woman contacted the newspaper with information that appears to solve at least part of the mystery. "I saw the letter in the paper and had a bit of a chuckle to myself when I read it because I knew straight away that people had seen our lanterns," said Andrea Hodgson, 36.Hodgson, her husband and their wedding guests released 50 orange, candle-lit Chinese lanterns into the sky at a reception on the evening of Dec. 27 where residents reported seeing the UFOs. They rose in the air and burned for 10 to 20 minutes, she said, adding that "they are biodegradable so they tend to just disappear after a while."

Woman sits on boyfriend's toilet for 2 years Girlfriend was physically stuck to the seat — her skin had grown around it

NESS CITY, Kan. - Deputies said a woman in western Kansas sat on her boyfriend's toilet for two years, and they're investigating whether she was mistreated.

Ness County Sheriff Bryan Whipple said a man called his office last month to report that something was wrong with his girlfriend.

Whipple said it appeared the 35-year-old Ness City woman’s skin had grown around the seat. She initially refused emergency medical services but was finally convinced by responders and her boyfriend that she needed to be checked. We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital,” Whipple said. “The hospital removed it.”

Whipple said investigators planned to present their report Wednesday to the county attorney, who will determine whether any charges should be filed against the woman's 36-year-old boyfriend. “She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body,” Whipple said. “It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself.”

He told investigators he brought his girlfriend food and water, and asked her every day to come out of the bathroom.

“And her reply would be, ‘Maybe tomorrow,”’ Whipple said. “According to him, she did not want to leave the bathroom.”

The boyfriend called police on Feb. 27 to report that “there was something wrong with his girlfriend,” Whipple said, adding that he never explained why it took him two years to call.

Police found the clothed woman sitting on the toilet, her sweat pants down to her mid-thigh. She was “somewhat disoriented,” and her legs looked like they had atrophied, Whipple said.

“She said that she didn’t need any help, that she was OK and did not want to leave,” he said.

She was taken to a hospital in Wichita, about 150 miles southeast of Ness City. Whipple said she has refused to cooperate with medical providers or law enforcement investigators.

Authorities said they did not know if she was mentally or physically disabled.

Police have declined to release the couple’s names, but the house where authorities say the incident happened is listed in public records as the residence of Kory McFarren. No one answered his home phone number.

Twins born on different days, months, years One was born just before midnight on New Year's, the other just afte

ROCHESTER, Mich. - They're twins, all right, despite what their spanking new birth certificates say.

Tariq Griffin entered the world at 12:17 a.m. on New Year's Day at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, Mich. Twin brother Tarrance was born a bit earlier — 26 minutes to be exact.

That means the boys have the unique distinction of having been born on different days, months and years.Their dad, Tarrance Sr., is also a twin. The parents say the boys are doing well, which is their main concern.

'Hello 911? I'm driving drunk' - Do Not Drink and Drive

BISMARCK, N.D. - Police get calls about drunken drivers all the time, but rarely do they come from the alleged offender.

A 17-year-old girl in Bismarck called 911 on New Year's Eve "to report herself driving under the influence," police Lt. Randy Ziegler said. "I've never heard of such a thing happening, and neither has anyone here."

The girl told authorities her location shortly before midnight Wednesday and officers found her in a parked car near downtown, Ziegler said. She failed a sobriety test and was arrested for failing to have control of her vehicle while intoxicated. The girl, whose name was not released because of her age, was not cited for drunken driving, Ziegler said.

"Her keys were in her purse and she was parked," Ziegler said. "She did tell us that she had been driving around for hours."

The call probably was a plea for help, he said.

"She told us her life was spiraling out of control, and she had spent the majority of time drinking over the past two weeks," Ziegler said.

The girl was released to her parents Thursda

Hostage released for pizza

An Australian prison guard held hostage for two days was released after a ransom demand for pizzas was met.

Up to 20 inmates at the Risdon Prison in Hobart, Tasmania, seized the guard in a protest over conditions in the maximum security jail.

Initially they made 24 demands to authorities, but eventually gave up their hostage after agreeing to 15 pizzas, Coke and garlic bread instead.

"At midnight, the final sticking point with the inmates was that they were requiring pizzas to be delivered. Our staff member was negotiated out with the delivery of 15 pizzas," Graeme Barber, Tasmania's director of prisons, told The Advocate newspaper.

The guard is recovering from his ordeal at home.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Friday, January 02, 2009

Hate waiting to be seated at restaurants? One man in southwest Atlanta does.

Police say the unidentified man drove his car into the side of a Chili’s restaurant after being told he had to wait for a table. The incident happened on the evening of Dec. 20, at the Chili’s in the 3600 block of Camp Creek Parkway.

A witness told police the man walked into the restaurant and sat down, according to an Atlanta police report.

She asked the man to get up and wait to be seated, the report said.

“I’ve been waiting for over thirty minutes now!” the man replied, according to the report.

He left the Chili’s and, several seconds later, drove his Pontiac Grand Am into the side of the building, causing an estimated $10,000 in damage, the report said.

No one was injured.

The man fled the scene in his vehicle before an Atlanta police officer arrived.

Finally something nice in the newspaper

Sun Journal Staff
A Craven County couple are in the Guinness World Records book.
The two did nothing outlandish such as sky-diving upside down, dancing for days, taking the longest lawn mower ride or having the most tattoos.
No, Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher of the Brownsville community have been married for more than 84 years. That is a feat in itself.
They have the world record of the longest marriage for a living couple.
They can thank their granddaughter Iris Godette for getting the recognition. She submitted the information to the Guinness Book of Records..
The information was apparently checked by Guinness and a certificate was given to the couple.
However, when you ask Herbert about the Guinness recognition, he just says, "Oh, Yeah?" The recognition has not changed their life.
He still looks at her with love and concern, as she looks toward him as if he will give her strength and guidance.
They have lived for more than 50 years in a house near the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport . They lived in James City before that but the land was purchased for apartments and the two moved.
Herbert was born June 10, 1905. His hearing is going but his mind is sharp. Zelmyra was born Dec. 10, 1907. She uses a walker to get around the house and yard. The two of them can still give their reasons for marrying on May 13, 1924.
"He was not mean; he was not a fighter," Zelmrya said. "He was quiet and kind. He was not much to look at but he was sweet."
Herbert said Zelmyra never gave him any trouble. "No, no trouble at all. We never ar gued, but we might have disagreed," he said.
Norma Godette, one of the couple's five children. said her parents have gotten along well through the years.
"One time, mama wanted to work. Daddy told her she could not work, that he could take care of the family. She slipped down to Cherry Point and got a job as a caretaker there," Godette said.
"Well, it was done; she got the job. I had to let it be," Herbert said.
Different religions did not tear the two apart. He is a member of Pilgrim Chapel Missionary Baptist Church . She is a member of Jones Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church . The churches are in James City , where they both grew up. For all of their married life they have attended their own churches. They go their own ways on Sunday morning. She reads the Bible daily.
The two watch television together. "We separate when the baseball comes on," Zelmyra said.
Herbert loves baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoys golf, because one of hi s son-in-laws plays the game.
They have no secret or sage advice as to why their marriage has lasted so long.
"I didn't know I would be married this long," Herbert said. "But I lived a nice holy life and go to church every Sunday.
"Yes sir, anything for her."
Zelmyra said Herbert was the only boyfriend she ever had. "We got along good," she said. "There was no trouble."
She said she is not tired of seeing him. "I didn't think I'd be married this long. He is quiet," she said.
Zelmyra said her husband had no annoying habits. They both said they shared the title of "boss."
The two sit on the porch and as a train goes by they count the cars. They also watch the neighbors who walk by.
"They were excellent parents," said Norma Godette. "We were poor, but we didn't do without a thing. If he had two cents he saved one cent."Herbert worked as a mechanic at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in New Bern for 35 years.
He took a bicycle, caught a cab or had a neighbor dr ive him to work.
That hard work and savings put all five of the children through college.
Inside the house are plaques, letters of recognition, and awards that both the Fishers and their children received for accomplishments in civic duties and church.
The house where they raised their children has two sitting rooms and three bedrooms. Now that the children are grown, the Fishers enjoy having a bedroom for each. Herbert Fisher can stay up until the last ball is thrown in the ballgame he is watching. And he does.
Herbert makes his bed each day and sweeps his floor.
He also checks on his wife as she rests.
Between the rests, they enjoy their children, ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Both say that if they had it to do over, they would not change their life.

Atlanta inner-city school gets $365K from Oprah

ATLANTA — A letter from Oprah Winfrey last week seemed like the world's best Christmas present — until teacher Ron Clark noticed an extra piece of paper flutter out of the envelope.

That's when the Atlanta educator saw the $365,000 check for the innovative private school he opened in one of the city's poorest neighborhoods in 2007. It was, quite literally, an answer to a prayer.

"We teach school all day and fundraise at night," said Clark, who finds private donors to pay most of the $14,000 annual tuition for each student. "To have an unsolicited gift come like that is incredible."

Clark surprised his students with the news of the donation Wednesday morning in a gathering at the south Atlanta school. The children, parents and teachers erupted in deafening cheers when he showed off the check.

Several cried at the news.

"Everything they learn is enhanced because of the teachers' dedication and creativity," said a tearful Gloria Nesmith, whose son, Cameron, is a fifth-grader at the academy. "And Oprah noticed. I'm just overwhelmed."

The donation, which likely will go to scholarships for students, would pay for 26 children to attend the school for one year, Clark said. The 80-student middle school depends almost entirely on donations to operate.

Special-needs student, 22, left on NYC bus in cold

NEW YORK — A 22-year-old man with cerebral palsy spent a frigid New Year's night alone on a school bus after a caretaker left him there, police and his family said.

Authorities said police found Edwin Rivera in a bus yard Thursday morning. He had been on the bus for 19 hours while the temperature outside dropped below 20 degrees.

Rivera, who cannot speak, was being evaluated at a hospital. He was expected to recover.

Authorities arrested 51-year-old Linda Hockaday, the bus matron responsible for looking after him, on a charge of reckless endangerment, police said. No information was immediately available on whether she had a lawyer, and there was no phone number listed under her name and address.

His parents reported Rivera missing Wednesday evening after he didn't return home from his special-needs school.

"I'm so relieved, and I'm so mad at the bus company for leaving him," his sister Leslie Rivera told WCBS-TV.

A possible phone number for the bus company was answered Thursday only by a recording that would not accept messages.
